Case Study: Quit Stories PSAs

Key West Video worked with the Regional Municipality of York last year to create a series of Quit Smoking PSAs. The region wanted to alert people to the resources available for those interested in giving up tobacco. Through the use of personal stories, we were able to connect with the target market. In less than a minute, each testimonial tells the story of how cigarettes negatively impacted a life. Then, the audience learns how quitting has affected the featured citizens.

Set the Stage

Each video opens with a York Region graphic and the voice of the storyteller. Somber music sets the mood for an introduction to a life dependant upon tobacco. Then we see the subject on-camera and learn their name and where in York Region they reside.

Hearing a personal story is relatable because it’s full of concrete situations, feelings and consequences. It’s an effective way to connect with your audience. This approach allows a viewer to see themselves in the same situation in a way statistics can’t mimic. Here, Corrine talks about her family and the importance of quitting for them.

The Darkness

Over the course of a sit-down interview, we learn about the subject’s history with tobacco and how it has adversely affected their life.  Below, Dave talks about his many years of smoking, the habitual aspect of his addiction and what finally led him to quit. Simple b-roll provides some visual variety.

The Light

In each video, there is a point at which the music changes. This signals a decisive moment when the subject talks about quitting. Every person struggled with their addiction and the effort it took to quit. Richard reveals that it was his young family that made him think about quitting. He goes on to share how freeing that decision was.

Learn More

Corrine, David and Richard all share personal stories, each compelling in a different way. The stories end with the subjects encouraging others to quit smoking or to seek help quitting. The videos wrap with a strong message about why being smoke-free has changed their lives for the better. As each person finishes talking, we see a back page with a link to York-sponsored resources.

Using Storytelling to Connect

Great storytelling creates an emotional connection—science proves this! Whether you’re using client testimonials to promote your services or your CEO has a great story about how she started the company, audiences relate to real people and real experiences. The Hills Are Alive With the Sound of…Story

We often downplay the importance of #sound when we tell #stories. In any #visual #media platform, be it #film, #television, or even presentation, sound plays an essential role in determining the overall #tone of a piece of work.

Our minds are stimulated by the various senses. Sound, in particular, has the unique ability to evoke emotion, release stress chemicals, and create new development pathways in the brain. According to the National Institutes of Health, music particularly affects our prefrontal cortex. This is the part of the brain that controls the link between sound, memories and emotion.

#Disney realized this early on, tugging on our emotional strings in the first 4 minutes of their 2009 movie, Up.

In #corporate #video #production, sometimes #dialogue isn’t necessary. Though masterfully crafted shots are critical to video (duh!), it’s equally important to choose the right sound bites, #audio clips and sound #effects when telling a story.

And sometimes sound is the only thing you need. We have the unique ability to familiarize certain sounds with particular experiences or nostalgic memories. Sound helps us lay the perfect groundwork for our minds to build on.

Media students are sometimes asked to create sound stories. These are completely auditory experience devoid of visuals. They augment our ability to create our own interpretations. We are able to pinpoint plots by recognizable noises and audible reactions.

The Hills Are Alive With the Sound of...Story?

Another form of sound storytelling is soundscaping. Soundscaping combines a plethora of sounds to create an immersive audible environment. Acoustic ecologists use sounds from natural landscapes (e.g. animals, weather etc.) and layers them with sounds comprised by humans through sound design and musical composition.

Here at Key West Video, we provide exceptional sound quality services to accompany your video.

The Importance of Storytelling in Corporate Video

Since the dawn of time, humans have used #storytelling as a means of communicating with each other. From the Stone Ages to the invention of the printing press, we have found ways keep #narrative alive from word of mouth to drawings, to music, to movable clay type.

With the introduction of #motion #picture in 1895, we found a more visceral way to get our stories across – #film. Finally, a medium that could accurately depict the human experience. While reenacting our daily experiences, we were able to get visual justice for #stories deserving to be told.

And even though motion picture has come a long way in the last 120 years, some fundamental elements remain the same.

The Importance of Storytelling in Corporate Video

Today, we use motion picture storytelling in a plethora of areas. Film. #Television. #Animation. Even #video #games. In the world of corporate video, storytelling is essential in representing who you are. It’s a way to simplify your company’s services or products in a way that your desired clients can understand and relate to. It can explain how your #product or #service is beneficial, or tell a story of how your product has changed someone’s life.

They can also be fun. By creating a clear, concise story around your company, it can be a great way to build a narrative that your audience can understand and share.

In a previous post, we touched on the importance of narrative in nerd culture. Some of the most poignant #comics have the best backstories, giving a character more depth. The more detailed the story, the more “meat” an audience has to work with, and the more interested they become.

Some of the reasons we at Key West Video like storytelling is because it helps our clients’ audiences picture themselves with that particular brand in their lives. We enjoy creating that #virtual #reality experience that enables us to picture ourselves doing something.

The Importance of Storytelling in Corporate Video

After all, most actions begin with #visualization, right?

Storytelling also adds a #human element to your company. Audiences want to know that there are actual people behind the #brands they buy, and how those people are more similar to them than different. How does your #company relate? Do they know what’s best for their #audiences? If so, how do they #communicate this without directly telling them what is good for them?

It’s also a great opportunity to talk about the history of your company. If we’re being frank, our clients might not care about who founded your organization, what changes have been made over the years, and how your success has grown by telling them this through text. But with the right #visuals to accompany a compelling story, you can easily hook your audience and engage them in your company culture.

Here at Key West Video, we offer top-notch video production. Have a story you want to share? Contact us today!
