Case Study: Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services

Key West Video recently worked with the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services (CCTS) to create video explainers. These  animated pieces are aimed at people who could potentially benefit from the organization’s services. Here, we take a look at the approach used for the videos and why they work.

Who We Are

Case Study: Commission for Complaints for Telecom-Television Services

This video’s goal is to increase public awareness about the CCTS. We begin by giving some example problems that service users will recognize. We want the viewer to identify with the situation of the animated characters and see themselves depicted. Clients generally ask us to be representative of the target market we’re addressing and since the CCTS is open to all Canadians, we tried to show a range of characters.

We continue with an introduction to the CCTS as a solution to the problems encountered by the people in the video. The video defines the service and its mandate and identifies who can benefit. We mention that the process is impartial and free, which is important to viewers.

The last bit of information we provide is a CTA. In under a minute, the viewer has learned about a free service that can help them resolve a potentially expensive and troubling dispute. Further, the target market knows how to file a complaint if they feel they can be helped by the CCTS.

How it Works

The other video we produced for the CCTS is an explainer that delves into the specifics of filing a complaint. We again start with examples of issues that consumers may be having with their service providers.  Then the CCTS is introduced as a problem-solver. After listing the ways a complaint can be filed, we walk the viewer through the process of filing and what to expect. All steps from an early resolution scenario to a final resort action are laid out.

The video concludes with a mention that service users will be asked to fill out a survey about their experience. A CTA letting the viewer know where to go for more information or to file a complaint accompanies the backpage.

Animated Explainers

These two short videos are chock-full of information. Using animation gave Key West Video the freedom to manipulate characters and visuals to fit the project’s goals. If you have a process that could use an animated explainer, call us today for a free quote.

Our Top 3 Animation Styles In Corporate Video Production

With so many animation styles out there, it can be difficult determining which one to go with – especially in corporate video.

And with all animation styles comes their own look.

At Key West Video, we offer a number of services – including animation. But sometimes our clients aren’t sure which ones best apply to their brand or product. Here we’ve compiled a list of some of the most popular animation styles we find ourselves using in our corporate video:

Whiteboard

Whiteboard, one of the more popular animation styles, is the process of creating a story using drawings and storyboards with pictures on a white backdrop (or whiteboard). most often used in television, whiteboard can also be seen on internet video services such as YouTube or Vimeo, as well. It’s often used interchangeably with animated doodling or video scribing.

2D vector style animation

2D vector style animation (also known as motion graphics) are another type of animation style that we use often. Using bitmaps and vector graphics, it is more suited for computer animation software such as Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, or Flash. As opposed to 3D (or three-dimensional) animation graphics, 2D vector style animations have a lesser appearance of depth. 2D also consists of flat animation as opposed to 3D, which has an extra dimension of ‘realism’ and sits on the z-axis. 2D animations are made by drawing each frame out.

Infographics

Though many understand infographics as still images, they can actually be animated, as well. In a process similar to interactive video, infographics can be brought to life in Adobe’s After Effects software. Animated infographics are a fun, easy way to provide vital information to an audience. Here’s a simple guide on how to create basic infographics onscreen.

The Balance Between Live-Action And Animation

Companies sometimes find themselves at a crossroads when attempting to balance live-action and corporate animation.

We at Key West Video might have finally found the perfect balance between the two. While animation and live-action are often combined, they do suit their specific niches.

A lot of our clients like to use live-action for their corporate video. Some of our most popular live-action videos are instructional video tutorials, corporate training, staff interviews, and commercials.

But notice that we said our clients like live-action.

They don’t require it.

Live-action is not a necessity.

On the other hand, some of our clients ask for a more visually appealing approach. They understand that certain content doesn’t always catch our attention, and request corporate animation, instead. This usually means infographs, doodle animation, charts, graphs, and sometimes even characters.

But what about combination videos? In the corporate video production world, it can be tough when figuring out how to balance both. Here we’ve outlined a list of things to consider when weighing your options.

Content

We’ve found that technology-savvy companies lean towards animation in their corporate videos. Animations are a clean, yet engaging, way to pique your audience’s interest. They provide your message – be it informative or educational -in a visually stimulating way.

At their core, animations are meant to be a fun way to send a message across, and can resonate better with your viewers.

Time Frame

A time frame is another thing to consider when debating live-action versus animation. The desired length of your video and production timeline can heavily restrict your production schedule. Depending on how tight your deadline is, live-action might be the easier option. How long is your supposed video? How soon do you need your corporate video?

Editing requires a great deal of time. Creating keyframes for animation takes even longer.

Budget

Animation on the other hand, requires a lot more technical work and highly-skilled editors to complete the job. Equipment used for high-end non-linear editing suites can be expensive, too.

Platform

One last thing to consider is the platform. More often than not, live-action is used for bigger mediums such as television. Live-action can mean as little as writing a script, casting a few actors and shooting with basic lighting, audio equipment, and a good camera.

If your marketing strategy relies on making an online presence, animation is a cool way to cut through the noise. A strong message with crisp visuals can really resonate with users and make for a rock-solid video marketing campaign.

Each client’s brand is different, making it difficult to determine a definitive answer. We at Key West Video have expertise in working directly with our clients to find the best possible way to executive their corporate video needs. For more information on our services, visit our website today.

Claymation in 2014?

Reviving the art of claymation in advertising and corporate video production.

There’s no denying that computer #animation (2D & 3D) has become an essential component in film & #VideoProduction. Here at Keywest video its something that we deal with daily. Whether its creating an interesting way for a logo to appear, or designing an animated sequence to convey a particular aspect of a #business. Claymation came up recently as a possible format for a project currently in pre-production here at Keywest, we wanted to explore the possibility with an animation test.

Claymation

Check out this timeline of notable advances in the art of animation from the UCLA website.

We find ourselves looking for alternative ways to display information, this helps us present new options to clients, and it diversifies our collection of demo projects at the same time.

For our #vlog this week, we wanted to show you a “proof of concept” video that we made for a client. Essentially, the idea of “claymation” was raised as a possibility. Most people that have a background in video production have some idea of what’s involved in this type of animation, but we wanted to get our feet wet and show the client that we could do it. (without spending too much time producing the sample)

As you can see, the sample features 3 separate scenes with camera motion motivated by the “actions” of the clay figures. We must confess that the shoot itself lasted about 10 minutes, and it was collectively out first attempt at this type of animation. The results are sufficient to demonstrate that: with a little bit of planning and effort, some striking results could be produced. (Since this test had neither of those, and it’s not without it’s charm)

If you want to learn more about claymation, check out animateclay.com. It’s an online community dedicated to #Claymation, providing information on techniques and support for those new to the art. Claymation is really just one of the many forms of stop motion animation, a style that has a long history in film, first emerging in the late 1800s.

We are always interested in experimentation and providing new exiting options for our clients. What type of animation should we try next?

Post-Production Services at Keywest

Post-production services are essential to every video as this is the stage where your video finally comes together.

At Keywest, we offer a variety of post-production services, from live action to motion graphics and animation, to help bring your video to life.

Post-Production Services - Edit Suite Post-Production Services – Edit Suite

Live Action

Live action editing is one of the most common post-production services performed here at Keywest. In this case, the editor will sift through the captured footage and re-assemble the clips to tell a story. This can sometimes be quite a challenge in the event that there is a great deal of footage and a rather limiting time constraint. Once the footage has been cut together, the final video comes together by adding elements such as voice overs, music, titles, colour-correction, audio cleaning, etc. Our talented editors here at Keywest can transform your raw footage into a captivating story. They will listen to your needs and convey your message in the most creative way possible.

Motion Graphics & Animation

If you’re looking to explain an interesting/abstract concept or include elements that live action can’t exactly replicate, post-production services such as motion graphics and animation are excellent tools to get your company/brand noticed. Our talented motion graphics artists here at Keywest can guarantee you an exciting and innovative animation for your next production! Corporate animation is a great way to explain your product or brand easily and in a short time frame. Our motion graphics artists will listen to your vision and collaborate with you to create the most unique and captivating animation for your company.

When it comes to post-production services, we understand that this stage can be particularly overwhelming and technical. In order to remedy this, we make sure that our clients are able to see the final product come together and provide editors with their input. Our online file sharing website helps avoid lengthy approval processes. Once we have cut together something for you to look at, we send you a link to your video, and you simply click, watch, send to others for comments or approval, and then send us your feedback. We then continue this process until you are fully satisfied with the finished product.
