Breakdown of Corporate Video Costs

Breakdown of Corporate Video Costs:

Why is producing a corporate video costly? And how much will a corporate video cost?

There are three main stages when it comes to corporate video production: the pre-production, production and post-production stage.

One of the major elements that will dictate your corporate video cost is the length of the video.

Costs will vary between different video production companies, but here is the breakdown of the actual elements that factor in as added costs in your budget:

Pre-production Stage:

Producer: In order to produce a corporate video, you will need a video producer. This cost of this can vary, depending on how experienced the producer is.

Creative Concept: You know you want a video, but what TYPE of video? Who is your target audience? Where will your video be marketed? This can be an added cost… if you don’t already have a creative concept in mind.

Script: Even if it’s a 2-minute video, writing a detailed creative script takes a lot of time from either a scriptwriter and or copywriter.

Production Stage:

Location: Where will your video be shot?

Studio rental: if you are shooting in studio, costs will vary depending on the size of the studio and the features it offers.

If the location of the shoot is far, and more than one shoot day, be prepared to budget costs for transportation, accommodation, and food for the crew.

Deciding to shoot in your own office can end up saving  you studio rental fees, but it all depends on what you want your corporate video to feature.

Crew:

Videographer: Videographers are like producers, the more experienced they are in cinematography, the more money they will end up costing you. If you will need more than 1 camera that means you will need more than one videographer. And depending on how extravagant your shoot is, you may need a bigger crew which will  drive up your production costs.

Here is a basic list of some of the crew you may need:

  • Actors (starting rate for some actors are somewhere between $500 per day)/ on-air talent (remember not everyone is good on camera)

  • Makeup artist

  • Production assistants/Assistant Producer

  • Grip

  • Audio specialist

  • Gaffer (lighting specialist)

Here is a list of some of the equipment that may be required depending on the production of the video:

  • Camera, camera lenses (higher quality= better quality of video= increase in costs)

  • Lighting kit

  • Green screen

  • Teleprompter

  • Audio equipment (lavs, boom mic etc)

  • Props and designs

Shooting Time: How long will the shoot take? Will it take just one day, or three, or more? This will be a major factor in cost; because then everything listed above will be multiplied by how many days of shooting you will need.

Post-production Stage:

Most video production companies will base the editing quote on the amount of time and complexity it will take the editor to edit the video. The following elements will be a factor in the amount of time it will take to edit:

  • Logging of footage (the more footage, the longer it will take)

  • Graphics (more complex = more time)

  • Animation (more complex = more time)

  • Voice over

  • Music

  • Stock footage

  • Transcriptions

  • Translation

  • Final edits/reviews

The distribution and delivery of your corporate video will also be another added factor.

  • Digital (compressed for YouTube, websites, etc.)

  • DVD

  • Blu-ray

  • Raw footage

Kickstarter coming to Canada!

Kickstarter will be available for Canadians starting September 9th!

The Rolling Stone calls it “Funds for the Future” and CNN is calling it “Paradigm-shifting”. What exactly is Kickstarter? Kickstarter is an online platform that helps to raise funds publicly for creative projects that need financial backing.  They raise funds for projects ranging from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology.

Since 2009, over $769 million dollars have been pledged to fund more than 47, 000 independent projects. Kickstarter’s mission is to help bring creative projects to life.

Starting September 9th 2013, Kickstarter will finally be available to Canadians.

Kickstarter is an innovative platform, which creators could receive 100 percent of the donations pledged.

How does Kickstarter work?

Creators sign up and set a funding goal and a deadline. It works as an all or nothing: creators either reach their goal and receive all the funding pledged or don’t reach their goal and receive nothing.

This is a great platform for anyone who has an innovative project and needs further funding. But how are projects able to stand out from the thousands of other projects on Kickstarter? How do they effectively get enough pledges to reach the funding goal by the deadline?

It’s all in the creator’s video. People who view product videos are 85 % more likely to buy that product than if there is no product video at all.

Online videos are increasingly being watched more often, as much as, or even more often than watching television.  In our society today, people are infatuated with watching videos for everything. When showcasing a new product, a well done product video will surely capture the attention of consumers.  How often are people really watching online videos? And does that have an effect on businesses that don’t have a product video? Keywest went out to find the answers to these questions and more.  Check out the video below to find out more.

The most funded Kickerstarter projects all have one thing in common; they all have great videos showcasing their innovative products and services.

High quality commercials and video ads (worth thousands of dollars) have already been seen by the general public. What does this mean? After watching a poorly produced video, the conclusion is simple; Kickstarter backers will come to assume that the product is a direct reflection of the video.

Here at Keywest Video, we are professionals when it comes to producing high quality product videos. We have been producing corporate videos for over 20 years. We can help any business big or small produce a product video that will get the product noticed, and if for kickstarter, can help it achieve the funding goal it needs by the deadline.

Samsung Promotional Ad: Worst Acting Job

Samsung Promotional Ad: Worst Acting Job

Worst Acting Ever Seen in a Promotional Ad Video

The new Samsung promotional video has been called “the worst acting job ever seen in an Ad” by Reddit, so of course I was intrigued and had to watch it. Reddit calling it the WORST acting job seemed a little harsh at first, but it was definitely true.

The ad features three actors, a baffled housewife, a studious Asian gamer, and a corporate ladder-climber—all robotically reciting a script about how amazing the product is. It was a good idea to feature three completely different stereotypes of people  for this video because the audience could then connect and relate to at least one of them.

The result is something that can’t really be described in writing, so you must see it for yourself below. The original was pulled from YouTube after it became a laughing stock on Reddit, but mirrored versions continue to circulate so that the world can appreciate this impressive feat of faux sincerity.

After this promotional ad was released, the corporate actor in the video made a statement explaining why the acting was so bad. He states that the ad will be dubbed in Korean and mostly be watched by Koreans.  He also says that it’s a promotional video, not a TV commercial, meaning it will be shown at conventions and expos and in-house. Even so, this should never be an excuse for bad acting and a poor script, TV commercial or not.

But after 3 minutes of squirming at the terrible acting job, I actually did want to go out and buy the new Samsung’s 840 EVO solid-state hard drive. The ad did a good job of explaining the perks of the new hard drive: how much faster it makes your computer. They also did a good job of showing us that it wouldn’t even be difficuly to install the product into your computer (which for the housewife type of people out there, it actually looks simple and easy). And since most of us has had some experience using a slow computer at least one time in our lives, this was a great way of connecting with the audience.

Even though the script was awful and the acting was horrible, the video became viral for being so bad and ultimately became that more popular. Did it make you want to go out and purchase the new Samsung solid state drive?

Corporate Video: It doesn"t have to be boring

Corporate Video: It doesn’t have to be boring

Considering Corporate Video for your business:

Thinking of getting a corporate video for your business?  But terrified it might lack creativity and bore your audience?

When most people think of corporate videos, that’s exactly what they might think.  You imagine a talking head wearing a suit and having to sit through ten minutes of information tossed at you (which may seem like countless hours).

Maybe you think your product, service or business itself may even be too boring to use in video marketing?

Here at Keywest, we can use ANY type of product and make it interesting. Check out our latest product videos: http://www.keywestvideo.com/product-videos.html

Let’s face it: lots of corporate videos out on the market today ARE really boring. Why? It’s because corporate videos are hard to make. It takes a lot of hard work and lots of time to plan. Most of the time the scripts aren’t interesting, there is no camera work, and the people in the video are just flooding the audience with information.

But corporate videos don’t always have to be like that. Here at Keywest we have been producing videos for over 20 years, and unlike other video companies, we specialize in corporate video production.

What makes us different from the other corporate video production companies out there?

We care about our clients and their problems. We deal with both large corporations and small businesses. And we know the challenges they may face, and solve it with our fresh and creative ideas.

We’ve produced hundreds of corporate videos that are both interesting and appealing. They have engaged audiences, leaving them with a lasting impression.

Here at Keywest, creativity counts.  We don’t produce the traditional corporate videos that lack an emotional connection with the audience. We don’t wing projects; we carefully plan them out. We’d like to make this an enjoyable experience for you.

We know all the mistakes that other video production companies do make. And because of that, we will do everything  in our power to avoid it. The end result?  Producing a corporate video that will bring out your business’ distinct personality, and we guarantee that it will be anything but boring.

Citizen Videographer

Citizen videography is an up and coming trend. With the advent of high definition smartphones and easily accessible social media outlets, the everyday citizen is now a journalist.

Years ago, people were required to get an education in a particular field in order to partake in content creation for the media, such as generating material for newspapers and television.

With the advent of the internet, blogging slowly arose, which in turn created the phenomenon of the citizen journalist – the idea that anyone could write a newsworthy opinion piece.

Citizen journalists are general members of the public without any professional training that are able to gather news and report outside of the mainstream media institutions.

An example of this is the celebrity gossip site PerezHilton.com, which has now become one of the top-visited celebrity gossip sites on the net.

But times are changing. This is now the era for the ‘citizen videographers’. What is a citizen videographer? They are the ones at the scene before the real journalists arrive. Sometimes, they are actually part of the story they happen to be shooting (i.e. a witness), and lastly they can be anyone who owns a camera.

There have already been videos hitting the internet on top newsworthy issues. Recently, a citizen videographer captured the last few moments of the police shooting that took the life of 18 year old Sammy Yatim: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/news-video/enhanced-footage-of-streetcar-shooting-that-left-sammy-yatim-dead/article13527671/

Citizen’s videos may be dark and blurry, but the public doesn’t care about that. It’s about being able to not just read the story, or see pictures. It’s about being able to see it and hear it at the same time.

Realistically, anyone can take a video and with the escalation of technology, citizens’ videos will continue to increase. But people shouldn’t confuse citizen videographers with the professional ones.

If a small business or large corporation wants a corporate video, or if someone wants an important event filmed like a wedding, they should go to professionals.

Professional videographers are experts in their field. They know the insides and outs of the camera, will use the right equipment (a real video camera, lights, microphones etc.), and actually have years of experience shooting, and have a creative vision.

Keywest Video is a corporate video production company based in Toronto with over 20 years of experience. Their videographers are professionals and are experts when it comes to producing quality videos.

Why Your Corporate Video Failed: 5 Common Mistakes

You’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars and invested all of your time and energy into this Video thinking thousands will watch it. The internet is so accessible that you assumed everyone would come across it. Makes sense right? However, after all this, you don’t notice any change in your business. Why is no one watching this video you put all your sweat into? Why did it fail? Here is a list of 5 common mistakes you may have made that contributed to the failure of your video:

  1. No clear message. Sometimes too much information is really too much information. What did you want your audience to do after watching that video? If you don’t know, they probably don’t know either.  There should be one clear straightforward message – any more than that would be too confusing.  A good video can be summed up in one sentence.  Therefore, sometimes a written script is essential (even when there is no voiceover) to map out the framing and delivery of your main idea.

  2. The video didn’t touch your audience. It simply failed to tell a story; your video didn’t make the audience feel something and keep them engaged. Clearly you want to promote your product/business and the most obvious way would be through facts and more facts. But if done the wrong way facts can be dull, boring, and lose the attention of your audience on the spot. Therefore, you need to know your audience andwhat they want so that you can better understand them and reach out to them on a more personal level. Remember: your audience comes first

  3. All About you. “Our company has this, or does this well  …etc” = dull. Don’t make it all about you. This doesn’t connect with your audience at all. You need to try and introduce something of value to your viewer. When Steve Jobs introduced the iPod, he could have said, “Apple made a thing that holds 5 gigs and is amazing and lightweight and just the zippiest thing ever!” Do you know what he said instead? “You can put a thousand songs in your pocket.”

  4. Budget isn’t big enough. Video production can be very costly. If you want an amazing video, you are going to have to fork over the dough.  Sometimes, people think that they can just hire someone who has all the equipment to make a video, and this person will provide them with the same quality of video as that of an actual professional production company. There is a difference, a vast one, and your audience will know. Remember that your video reflects directly on your company, and elements like bad lighting, bad actors, and bad photography, etc. reflect badly on your image

  5. Video is too long. Keep your video short.  Due to the ever-shortening attention span of the web audience (after less than 30 seconds, if not interested they can simply move on to another video without fully grasping yours), videos need to be as short as possible. The audience can only really be engaged for a short period of time, and then they start to lose their focus. But what if your video requires more time? If this happens to be the case, produce a primary video and support it with supplementary videos to get your message across.

Here at Keywest, we have been producing corporate videos for more than 20 years. We are aware of the above mentioned mistakes and more; therefore, we are committed to ensuring your corporate video doesn’t fail.

5 Things to Look for in Choosing a Corporate Video Company

Corporate Video Companies… they all make videos. So, does it really matter WHICH Video Company you choose to go with? Without any guarantee of how it will really end, you will be parting with a large sum of money.

So, you should consider being a little finicky when it comes time to choose one.  Or you could end up with an amateur video, with wasted money and time, which can ultimately reflect badly on your corporate image. Once you have found your company –after much patience, you wont need to repeat the process for your next project. Here are 5 tips and guidelines to look out for when choosing a Corporate Video Company.

1. Make sure this Video Company is actually Professional. Do your research. How long has this company been in business? What make’s a professional is their training, skills and their countless years of experience on the job. These days many people are calling themselves  ‘professional’. Just because you might own a camera and a laptop with editing platforms doesn’t make you a pro. If you want a good video, you will also need a company that has high-end equipment – green screen-teleprompter’s etc. Although, even though the company may have the most high-end equipment, that’s not all that matters. What really matters is the ‘professionals’ running it

2. Reputation.  Does the company have an online reputation? Are they found on any social media sites? If so, pay close attention to what people are saying about them. A great Corporate Video Company should have testimonials and reviews http://www.keywestvideo.com/rave-reviews.html from previous clients posted on their website. Check that out. Also look out for repeat clients. If clients keep coming back, it can only mean one thing: they were clearly more than satisfied with their work.

3. Quality of Work. Have you seen any of their work? They should offer recent samples of their work pertaining to the style of video you are interested in. A clear sign the company isn’t legit is when they have no samples to offer you, or offers you dated material. Looking at their previous works will also give you some sort of idea as to if they have fresh and creative ideas. If you see the same boring style of videos, that’s a sign that your video most likely wont be any better than that.

4. Customer Service? Do they even seem like they care about your vision? At first you may think there doesn’t have to be that’ chemistry’ when we first meet; business is business. Think again. You will be working with these people for weeks. There will be those long days of countless hours of shooting and editing- and it wouldn’t be half bad if you were hanging out with people you actually enjoyed working with.

5. Budget. Avoid companies that don’t provide you with a clear and comprehensive quote after your meeting.  Some production companies offer packages of their services in addition to being able to add on even more services.  You will most likely find quotes all over the map, but make sure to take careful note of the breakdown of the prices in the quote. Don’t make price the one and all deciding factor in choosing a company. Some companies guarantee a ridiculously lower price compared to others, but then slowly adds hidden costs during the later stages, which in the end can end up costing you more.

Here at Keywest we embody all of the above mentioned and more. We have been producing corporate videos for over 20 years. We are experts in corporate videography and post-production.We offer countless samples of corporate videos from clients whom we have yet to disappoint. Check us out on our website for more information or for a quote on your next video.
